Professional Development With a CLASS
by Valerie Ross
On November 30th, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) held a meeting at Barrack’s Inn to bring together seasoned professionals, current college students, and newly hired engineers to discuss the joys and frustrations of adjusting to a corporate working environment. Britta Jost was the moderator for the evening and the featured panelists were Shevaun Fennell, Cheryl Verbeke, and April Privett.
Shevaun Fennell attended Syracuse University and majored in Chemical Engineering. She worked for Caterpillar for 7 years in a variety of positions industrial chemist, process engineer, logistics analyst, and design engineer but currently works for Chillicothe Metal Co. Inc. as an operations manager.
Cheryl Verbeke graduated from Ohio State University with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. She also earned her MBA from Bradley University. Cheryl has worked for Caterpillar for 9 years in purchasing, supplier quality, and project management.
April Privett earned her Civil Engineering degree from University of Iowa and currently works as a project engineer for the pipelayer design group. Her previous experience at Caterpillar includes design, analysis, and laboratory testing on undercarriage.
Britta Jost has worked for Caterpillar for 2 years and graduated from Michigan Tech University with a B.S. in Mathematics and a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Currently, she is a dynamic analyst in Caterpillars track-type tractor division.
The theme of the meeting was simple: Confidence with CLASS.
After a sumptuous dinner, the panelists were asked to draw on their experiences to answer questions on women in the workplaces and on how to cope with a new workplace environment. A summary of the subjects covered and the responses from the panelist are shown below.
On portraying confidence when: a) the project is overwhelming or b) there is not enough information:
The panelists say:
As with any project, it is always easier to reach the end goal if the project is broken up into smaller projects and distributed among team members or a few teams. When there is a lack of information, be humble: admit that there is not enough information and ask questions to gain insight.
On breaking into a tight knit group of peers when starting a new assignment:
The panelists say:
Try to meet someone new every day when you move to an unfamiliar place. Seek opportunities to create new friends: a trip to the cafeteria to get a cup of coffee could be just the right excuse to learn more about your new co-workers. Also, don’t be afraid to “invite yourself” to a team social event…just don’t be too intrusive.
On resolving a situation where someone else took credit for your work:
The panelists say:
Sometimes it’s best not to correct the person who took credit in front of the team, but rather focus on the benefits to the team or to the organization itself. When it comes time for your review, however, you do want to take ownership of your thoughts and ideas and state exactly what goals you accomplished or exceeded.
On over-committing to too many projects:
The panelists say:
It is most important to work within your boundaries. You should not be required to work on every project that is presented to you and do not feel guilty for not being able to. If you are overwhelmed, work to reduce some of the work load with your team mates that assigned the project to you. Most importantly, maintain constant communication with your supervisor to provide updates on the project or to help reduce your work load.
On overconfidence:
The panelists say:
As long as you are not abusive or abrasive, you can never be too confident! Do acknowledge when there is a lack of information, but do not let this hinder you from asking questions.
On confrontation management:
The panelists say:
It is best to talk to your manager/supervisor early after the event occurs to resolve any workplace issues, especially if an outside party (i.e. a supplier) is involved. Talk with co-workers to “settle down” or excuse yourself and take a walk. It is best not to try to explain the situation or event when angry or frustrated.
The comments of the panelists were well received by the SWE members and students in attendance. They encouraged us to seek as many opportunities in our professional careers as possible and also become members of other engineering societies that pique our interests (i.e. SAE, NSBE, etc.).

Fitting it all in Recap
by Kathleen Bendick
On Wednesday, January 24rd the Central Illinois SWE section hosted a panel discussion to help its members learn how to cope with “Fitting it All In.” Four guests speakers, at various points in their life, discussed how they have figured out how to balance family, work and personal responsibility in today’s high demand world.
Teresa Cushing is an Aftertreatment engineering manager for Caterpillar Inc. She graduated from Michigan State University in Chemical Engineering. Teresa is also the mother of three children, and still has time to remain active as her daughter’s Brownie leader.
Rich Cushing is a senior engineer at Caterpillar Inc, and graduated from Southern Illinois University. He currently works at the Peoria Proving Grounds. He is married to Teresa Cushing, and is the father to three children.
Kate Socha is the Vice Commander for the United States Air Force for the 182nd mission support. She graduated from Illinois State University as a dietary specialist. On top of having three children Kate fits in time for personal fitness activities.
Laura Swickard is an engineer in the Performance Transmission group at Caterpillar Inc. She recently graduated from Bradley University and is currently working on her MBA. Laura is very active with extracurricular activities, such as softball, adventure racing and volleyball.
With a married couple, working mother, and recent college grad, the panel lent their advice on how they manage to fit everything in. They gave their input and opinions on the various questions asked by the audience.
To sum up the meeting in a nutshell, to survive at life one must learn to compromise, be flexible, and most of all enjoy, when trying managing to fit everything in.
The parents on the panel can relate to the majority of parents out there, that it takes a lot of sacrifices to try and fit in both their children’s activities and work. Sleep, they agreed, was a significant sacrifice they have had to make. When they were younger, 8 hours of sleep a night was the norm, now their average is more like 6 hours. However, they wanted to reiterate that yes, they may not get as much sleep, but the enjoyment they get from spending time with their children is worth it.
Another thing all the panelists agreed upon, is that work never becomes easier. The longer they work, the more responsibility they have. So when it comes to balancing work and home life, organization and prioritizations become key. If going home and eating dinner as a family is important, or participating in various team sports and activities is important, then leaving work at a specific time is imperative. Yet, the panelist say that as long as you want to do these things, sometimes the sacrifice is to bring work home with you. When there just don’t seem to be enough hours in the day, work at home can be the answer.
When dealing with unexpected interruptions or events, one must learn to be flexible. As much as someone can hope to plan every detail; that is just not how life works. For example, at work, if an important task suddenly needs to be completed, the panelists shared the importance of prioritizing. When they gather all the necessary information, and plan their course of action, often times it takes extra time or effort to complete; whether that means working at home, or not spending as much time on another project. If the unexpected event deals with family, like a sick child, their key advice was to maintain open communication with their supervisors, if they need to stay home. As long as you and your supervisor understand the situation, and you follow through on what work needs to be completed, everything should be all right .
One issue that a lot of people in this generation are dealing with is living as a dual career couple. This situation where both partners are working and trying to develop their career can be hard. In the past, one spouse would sacrifice their job, so the other could succeed and continue to grow. However, luckily this is not the case today. The panelists mentioned that, yes, there are compromises, but one person is not sacrificing their career on behalf of the other. It is important to communicate with supervisors about finding work as a pair if a significant move is expected. The panelists all agreed that living apart from their family was not an option if a move was required. Therefore, they maintain open communication with each other and with their supervisors.
Even with all this discussion about work, it is still very important to remain in a happy and strong relationship. The panelists provided some tips on how they maintain their relationship. Everyone mentioned that it is important to continue to go on dates, even after adding children to the family. Taking that time to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company is just a small joy that continues in their life. Some mentioned that the little things they do together, amidst an increasingly busy schedule, helps them stay happy. Some examples were talking when folding laundry, or relaxing together on Sunday afternoons. Each couple will be different, but as long as one doesn’t forget about their significant other with all the other distractions in their life, is a good medicine for a happy relationship.
The panelists all had unique stories to share on their secrets for a busy life, but again, life takes compromise and flexibility, when trying to fit it all in.

Event Highlights
by Kelsey Anderson
Most of the SWE-CI professional members traveled together via Amtrak from Bloomington to Chicago. Travel to and from the conference was fun and relaxed, thanks to the planning of Travel Captain April Privett. We stayed in the downtown Hilton and were shuttled to the Northwestern University (NU) campus for a Friday evening social event - pizza, a jazz combo, and some trivia questions in the atrium of the NU Medical Building. After the social, we had a chance to meet some of our soon-to-be new professional members at the Upgrade Networking Event. The Event was open to graduating seniors and professional members, and the seniors’ names were all entered into a raffle to receive a free upgrade to professional membership upon graduation.
Saturday started off with a light breakfast, keynote speaker, and presentations from collegiate sections that were bidding to host the 2008 regional conference. Congrats to Bradley University, the winning presenters! After the presentations, we loaded buses and headed back to NU for box lunches and a selection of seminars. Stacey Delvecchio and Beth Mack presented a seminar on Networking and Mentoring. Gwenne Henricks also presented as part of the “Distinguished Speaker” series. Other seminars ranged from presentations on what SWE is doing with regards to government relations, landing a dream job, alternate career paths for engineers, teambuilding, and several technical seminars. A closing banquet Saturday evening featured a speaker from Ford who led the recent re-development of the Mustang (including a sweet video showcasing her team’s product). The hosts from Northwestern had a full page of activities for us to pick from on Saturday night, including tours of several areas of the city.
