Good to Great
We've become so conditioned to think of performance as something that develops along evolutionary lines, that it takes a minute to grasp the notion that competence can actually inhibit achievement. "Good is the enemy of Great", according to author Jim Collins.

Something to Talk About - Delegation
by Brittney Lindstrom
During the January Professional Development Seminar, attendees enjoyed hearing East Peoria Mayor Charles Dobbelaire present his views on delegation. As a city official Mayor Dobbelaire must certainly know when and where to delegate important tasks and projects. Not only did the audience learn his opinions on delegation, but also some interesting facts about running a city. After the seminar, SWE members gathered for dinner and networking at The Lariat Steakhouse.

Region H Conference Recap
by April Privett and Stacey DelVecchio
Central Illinois Section had several attendees at the SWE Region H Conference. Section members attending included: April Privett, Shevaun Fennell, Stacey DelVecchio, Laurie Bidrawn, Teresa Cushing, Amy Hess, and Laura Copp. Additional attendees from the area included: Leslie Paulson, Sue Jensen, Sheela Rajendran, and Christa Setterlund. Arriving Friday night, the group tested out their gambling skills at a casino night, thankfully with fake cash. Saturday's opening breakfast speaker was Leslie Paulson from Caterpillar. She gave an overview of her Caterpillar career and valuable lessons, including the important revelation that she has never solved a differential equation during her career. Stacey DelVecchio gave a presentation on the benefits of SWE. The morning session closed with Bradley's very impressive bid to host the Region H conference in 2007. Unfortunately, they were not successful in achieving their bid, but they sure made Central Illinois proud! During the afternoon, there were several interesting professional development sessions and local industry tours, including a session from our very own Central Illinois Section member, Teresa Cushing. Teresa’s 'Introduction to 6 Sigma' helped people learn the basics behind 6 Sigma and how it can help their next project or job. Other sessions and tours included Moms in the Workplace, Women as Leaders and their Challenges, a 3M tour, and an Iowa State Campus tour. The evening Home Cookin' banquet wrapped up the conference and was enjoyable and inspirational.

Think of this book as a 320-page, hip, savvy mentor/best friend with an untempered, straight-shooting style and an aresenal of uncommon advice for businesswomen in their twenties and thirties.
As always the discussion is very informal -- you don't even have to read the book beforehand!
